Edward River Library Launches Book Week Writing Competition

Get ready to unleash your imagination! In celebration of the much-loved annual Book Week, Edward River Library is thrilled to announce the launch of their first-ever Book Week Writing Competition, kicking off on 2 June 2025.

In alignment with annual Book Week celebrations, this year’s competition theme, “An Edward River Adventure,” encourages students from Years 7 to 12 to craft original short stories inspired by the landscapes, legends, and life around Edward River.

Mayor of Edward River Council, Cr Ashley Hall, said the competition is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the creativity of local youth.

“This competition is a fantastic way to celebrate the creativity of our young people and the unique character of our region,” Cr Hall said. “I can’t wait to see how students bring Edward River to life through their stories.”

The competition is open to all high school students, with word count requirements tailored by year level and three prize categories:

• Years 7/8: 500–750 words

• Years 9/10: 500–750 words

• Years 11/12: 800–1,000 words

Entries must be submitted by 18 July 2025, either online via the Edward River Council website - https://www.edwardriver.nsw.gov.au/Community/Event/BookWeekCompetition - or in person at the Edward River Library.

A judging panel made up of a local Councilor, a Deniliquin High School English teacher, and a member of the Edward River Council Library team will review the submissions and select the winners. The results will be announced during Book Week, from 17 to 23 August 2025.

Edward River Council CEO, Jack Bond, said the initiative reflects the Council’s commitment to fostering creativity and community engagement.

“We’re proud to support initiatives that inspire imagination and community connection,” Mr Bond said. “We want students to explore their storytelling talents while celebrating the amazing place that we call home.”

There will be a range of fantastic prizes for the winner and runner up in each age category, ranging from having the short story published in the Pastoral Times and on Edward River Council’s website, to $50-$250 Shop Local vouchers.
