Helping Landholders Green the Region – Tree Planting Scheme Returns

Edward River Council is inviting local landholders to take part in its annual Rural Tree Planting Scheme, which opens Monday 4 August and runs until Friday 12 September 2025.

The launch of the program coincides with National Landcare Week, recognising the efforts of volunteers and community groups dedicated to protecting and rehabilitating Australia’s natural environments.

The scheme offers eligible residents access to 60 varieties of native seedlings at a subsidised cost of just $1.35 each, supporting landholders in increasing native vegetation across the region and improving biodiversity, soil health, and landscape resilience. It is open to ratepayers with properties of one hectare or more.

Available varieties include redgum, wattle, bottlebrush, melaleuca, eucalyptus, and more. Seedling allocations are based on property size:

• 1–10 hectares: up to 50 tube seedlings
• 10–500 hectares: up to 150 tube seedlings
• Over 500 hectares: up to 300 tube seedlings

In addition to subsidised seedlings, tree guards are also available to order, with a contribution from the Ricegrowers' Association helping to offset costs for participants.

Edward River Council CEO, Jack Bond said the scheme continues to be a practical and impactful way for landholders to contribute to the region’s environmental health:

“This program is a great example of how small actions can lead to long-term benefits. By planting native species, landholders are helping to create healthier ecosystems, support local wildlife, and strengthen the natural resilience of our rural areas.”

Seedlings ordered through the scheme will be available for collection in May or June 2026.
