SUBSIDISED TREE SCHEME OPENS IN LANDCARE WEEK

Edward River Council's annual tree planting scheme has opened with 58 varieties of seedlings available to eligible residents.

It coincides with the annual celebration by Landcare Australia which acknowledges the work of people who are actively restoring, enhancing and protecting the natural environment in their community.

Edward River Council’s rural tree scheme is aimed at increasing native vegetation in the region, by subsidising the cost of native seedlings for local ratepayers on properties one hectare and over.

The subsidised seedlings are available to order now from now until 15 September at a cost of $1.25 each. Varieties available include redgum, wattle, bottlebrush, melaleucas, eucalyptus and more.

Owners of properties from one to ten hectares can order 50 tube seedlings. Properties from ten to five hundred hectares are eligible for 150 tube seedlings, and properties over five hundred hectares 300 tube seedlings.

Edward River Council Mayor Cr Peta Betts said the scheme was aimed at helping local property owners to landscape their homes as well as improve the environment.

“This is a very popular scheme and each year we receive more orders. It is wonderful to see our environment reaping the reward of having more trees, which provide habitat for native birds and animals.

“And how appropriate that we are launching in Landcare Week! Our local farmers and landholders do a magnificent job in managing their land and I want to acknowledge them, our local Landcare Groups and all the local schools that have Junior Landcare Groups.”

Seedlings ordered from the scheme will be ready for collection next year in May or June.
